Signs along The Way

I have been looking for signs along The Way this week.  As I journey through my day I am looking for anything that might point me toward the Father.   Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me".  So Jesus...He is the way and The Way.  I look all day for signs of Jesus...The Way

I look it up in the Webster's and am convinced once again that this book of words and their meanings is a holy book.  It is not much of a word really...just three letters.  And right there in the dictionary is the salvation story.

Way is "a state of affairs...how someone does something, their usual habits, actions and qualities" and God he leaves us to our own state of affairs until we recognize our need for his way, for him.  Way is "an opening for passage" and when we recognize our need we look for a saving passage...Jesus.  Way is "movement or progress along a course" and God he posts signs of Himself all along the journey to guide and direct.

Have I been living and forgotten that I am saved?

I sit in the simulcast and realize how much of my life I live under the law.  But the law...it doesn't save.  Grace is for saving.  Have I forgotten grace?  So many times I hear the story...tell the story of Jesus.

Just yesterday with the four year olds I tell the story of creation...and sin...and Jesus making a way.  And the little one with the side bun and chubby cheeks she says, "you have to squish Jesus down".  As she says it she holds here hands out like she is cupping Jesus right there in her palms.  I have to ask because there has to be more to a squished down Jesus.

"Why do we have to do that?"

"So he can fit in your heart!"

Lessons from a store cashier, a bible teacher, and a four year old.  Each holding up their sign reminding me to lived as if I am saved.  Maybe I got so busy on the journey...that I forgot.  And so these things I remember...

You don't need more Jesus...you already have all of Him!

Living the law is a way that leads to death...grace is the way of  life!

When we enter into The Way, we don't shrink Jesus to fit our hearts...he expands our hearts to fit Him!

Don't Forget It!

I read the scripture five times.  Only six short verses but the assignment is to read it five times and focus on a different aspect each time.  And so I begin with these words,

"Moses told the People of Israel to celebrate the Passover and they did-in the Wilderness of Sinai at evening of the fourteenth day of the first month.  The People of Israel did it all just as God had commanded Moses...
God spoke to Moses: "Tell the People of Israel.  If one or another of you is ritually unclean because of a corpse, or you happen to be off on a long trip, you may still celebrate God's Passover.  But celebrate it on the fourteenth day of the second month at evening.  Eat the lamb together with unraised bread and bitter herbs.  Don't leave any of it until morning.  Don't break any of its bones.  Follow all the procedures."--Numbers 9: 4-5, 9-12

It had been a year since the Israelites had been delivered from slavery.  One year since the people had crossed on dry ground.  Only 12 months had passed.  I wonder...could you really forget?

Forget frogs and gnats...darkness and blood?
Forget death taking all first born...but not yours?
Forget the parting of a sea...towers of water on both sides?
Forget dry ground under your feet where water had been since the beginning of time?
Forget that as soon as you move across...the last person safe...that water falls engulfing the enemy?

If you had seen it with your own eyes, experienced it for yourself, could you really forget?

This forgetting must be the case with us or there would be no need for the Passover.  No need to be reminded of the things God had done.  This morning I have a Passover experience of sorts.  God reminding me of the things I know.  Helping me to focus on the very aspects that have become a part of who I am instead of all the things I must accomplish...instead of the failures that stick out.

Each time I read a new word pops right off the page.

...way, commanded, follow, leave, celebrate...

Do these words mean anything?  Are they reminders of that which I have forgotten.  I look at the words...roll them around in my mind.  What do I know about these words based upon His word.  These words could be road signs like the ones my son in learning about in drivers educations.  Spiritual signs that lead us on the journey.  I see them along the journey like black words on a bright yellow diamond.

I think I have forgotten...needed a reminder...a passover.

Take some time to think about these words.  Look up their definition.  Do they remind you of a particular scripture or something you have learned.  These are words that slow me down...remind me of who I am...whose I am.

Revelling...

I come to day seven in my new devotional and there is nothing to study on this day. The writer has designated the seventh day of study as God Encounters. My assignment is to review and reflect and even revel in the ways God has revealed himself to me these last six days.

I decided in a moment to skip it. Let's move forward. I am ready for the next lesson.

This transition in our lives brings me to tears at the strangest times. Yesterday was one of those days. No specific trigger or circumstance...just a momma missing her baby.

This morning the chair I sit in to study is covered in parts of a broken dryer and the repair man is coming. I grab my stuff and go to the kitchen ready to take on the next devo. With the flick of a finger my notebook lights up and there sits an encouragement from a sweet friend.

Isn't it marvelous how God knows just what you need. And what I need is a day of reveling. No word to study...no thoughts to consider...just take time to be. I often tell my friend I never look back at my journal entries...what's the point? We have to move forward, right?

Revel means to take intense pleasure or satisfaction in...even a wild celebration. Maybe this is the key to a day of strengthening.

And so I give thanks
...for a text from my oldest at just the right time
...a friend who leaves me a college mom basket right on my desk
...a mentor who listens through my tears and gives me wise advice
...a sister who walks with me in the late evening even though she is tired
...encouraging words from a sweet friend

Moving forward and growing is a seasonal thing. A cycle of learning, repenting, growing paired with times of reveling. Today I wildly celebrate the one who created this cycle and knows just what I need.

What's Your Name?

We cram in the elevator to see the dorm room for the first time. She stands behind us, the one helping us move in and smiles.

She asks my daughter, "What's your name?" She wants more than just the name. Is it short for something? Why this name? And then she nods and smiles and says she likes it.

Later that day as we finish up the moving, the meeting of a roommate, a trip to Target, and a last meal. I see her again. There she is, taller than most, standing in line for the elevator. She waves at my daughter and then turns to me and says,

"Hey Ronni's mom!"

Just two weeks ago I wanted to know what my name meant. Not the name this girl called me, Ronni's mom, but my name...the one given to me by my parents. There in the quiet I am prompted to search for the meaning. His gentle reminder of who He says that I am.

My pastor reminded me that this is a time of letting go and letting go is hard. Isn't that the journey of being someone's mom...a journey of letting go? It leaves a void at times...her being miles away and so I reach to Him. The one who inspired my name...knew I would need the definition today...reminding me of who I am.

Take a listen to this song I hear on the radio often.  One that reminds me of who I was...of who He is growing me to be.  What would you write on your name tag?  Is it one that He uses to define you?  Is it how He sees you?  Are you stumped?  Search out the meaning or your name...you might be surprised at what you find.

When words should be few...

Monday...the day for clarity and my friend who I call she asks if I have gotten any? The significance of that word didn't really hit me until later in the sanctuary. There in the quiet I read...

"Guard your steps as you go to the house of God and draw near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools; for they do not know they are doing evil. Do not be hasty in word or impulsive in thought to bring up a matter in the presence of God. For God is in heaven and you are on the earth; therefore let your words be few."--Ecc. 5

It is clear that I am to guard my steps...to listen rather than speak...to have few words about the matter.

This matter that has cropped up is divisive. Causing others to be tossed back and forth...leaving me feeling drained. And there are ones I deeply love on both sides of an issue that has left Jesus in the background.

Everything feels heavy around the office today...a weighted cloud settles around me and tears well. I close the door to shut out the sound of voices talking...distracting me from work. I flippantly turn on some music mainly to further drown out what is going on around my little space.

David Crowder has been waiting there to fill the air around me with a message. Won't you take a listen...

You can almost touch it...God's warmth floods the space around me. And God he shines...and I am put back on my feet. This is the place we must run to when His light becomes dim...hard to see. The dark is just an absence of light and we are called to "be the light of the world". So let's shine among those being tossed as if we are a light house on the shore. Not with words or theory or theology...nor scripture or opinions that can be used to tear and wound. No...let's keep our words few...and our light bright.

Until...

Little black words on the white screen read...what does until mean?  The text from my friend brings me back to this word again.  When I think about it I am amazed at the power in such a little word.

Webster's says until is a "function word".  It indicates "continuance" for a specific time period.  Yet God doesn't exist in time and his continuance has no beginning and no end.

Yesterday, the day to get a clear picture of my heart, revealed that which I had been trying to ignore.

Pride working its way back in...

My tongue getting in the way...

So this journey may continue a while with no specified time of completion.  This seems hard..."until" gives me something to strive for...an ending to a hard thing.

Lately my friend and I we have been pushing ourselves during our exercise sessions.  We run for short periods of time or distances.  We stand at the top of the hill and decide to run to the next mailbox.  We start and I begin to get tired...legs burning...lungs heaving.  Just a few more steps...no stopping until....

When there is no finish line the race seems to go on forever.  And this work that Jesus does in us, it does go on forever.  And we must press on to win the race.

"Do you not know that in a race all runners run but only one gets the prize?  Run in such a way as to get the prize."--1 Cor. 9:24

Until...

There it is...in the quiet as I finish my study this morning...the call to return to this place.  There is struggle with the thought of returning to this discipline.  I think of all the difficulty in the spiritual discipline of fasting...the sacrifice...the obedience...the constancy of it.  My flesh doesn't want to go.  I have come up with a hundred excuses to put it off.

"How long Lord?"

If I have a set amount of time maybe then it will not seem so hard.

I hear the word "until" and I wonder "until what?"

This word it bounces around in my thoughts.  The more I whisper this word the greater the potential of it all becomes.

And so...I begin and will continue...until.

Chaos Abounding

All around it seems chaos is abounding...things happening and changing at rapid speeds...and last week was too much.

...news of a leadership change, bombs going off, senior night, a letter saying no to that which we were hoping for, explosions in West, terrorists captured...

The rubble of these things just seems to be laying around. We look and wonder what to do with this mess. In the aftermath of chaos I usually get to work. My hands must do something...anything. I spent the weekend finishing a few tasks and restoring order to places in the house that chaos has touched.

After chaos and the rubble is removed and things are put back in place. After it looks as if it never happened, houses are rebuilt, blood on a boat is wiped away, and denials are accepted...what then? My friend he wrote on facebook that our country used to feel safe and now it doesn't. Yes, we can sweep the streets and mend bodies but what about our hearts?

Sometimes the things that happened in the scriptures seem so far away. Yesterday's sermon reminded me of how timeless His Word is. There is Jesus sitting on the mountain with crowds surrounding him. He has spent countless hours healing the sick, giving freedom to those consumed, holding babies and feeding thousands. He has cleaned up the rubble in their lives and taken care of those that need immediate relief. Yet, they still remain...hanging around...following him. Why? What more do they want? After your illness is healed, why not go back home to your normal life?

I am certain that someone in that crowd was like me. Nine times Jesus says the word "blessed". Blessed and the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek and the peacemakers, the hungry and the merciful. This is how He began his teaching...by reminding them that even amidst the chaos and rubble...they are blessed.

I have spent the last few months hiding these words in my heart...memorizing these very words of blessings. Painting a door chalkboard black is my response to the chaos...the not knowing what is coming next. The words read bright on the door.

"Now faith is being sure of what you hope for and certain of what you do not see."--Hebrews 11:1

Faith is a now response to the past, present and future. The rubble becomes building blocks that God uses to build our faith and trust in Him. By faith we call ourselves blessed...in the middle of the chaos...and the rubble...we are blessed.

When Things Drop

How many times does one who juggles drop the ball before they get it right? I see a commercial with a man juggling chainsaws and think...

what happens when one of those hits the ground...or foot...or hand?

Yesterday...I juggled. Beginning the day with the notion that abiding in the Presence was an act to do now. Even though God doesn't need time and He is in every moment, our connection with Him, remaining in Him, happens in the moment.

The day's circumstances happen and I take each one and toss high in the knowing that He is control.

A phone call reminds me that when you're learning to juggle, dropping is part of the process. I step into the back office for a moment...to catch my breath. The one in pink, my sister, she sees me and offers her help. Her presence is really all the help I need.

We walk to find Bibles and teary eyed kindergartners fight, boys disrespect...sixth grade girls roll their eyes.

Catch...toss...catch...toss...

Riding in the car later with the one I love...talking about the day and hoping I can salvage what I have dropped. I describe the juggling and he wisely says..."there are times when we have to juggle so many things that something is sure to drop."

Learning to abide in this season is not about keeping everything in the air. It is not about striving to be perfect...never letting anything fall. Practicing Presence is focusing on Him in the midst of it all.

I'm awake this morning and it's a new day full of potential to catch...toss...drop. I am sure all three will happen...and yet joy and peace reign in my heart. I hear the notes faintly growing stronger as I put words to melody...

"Great is thy faithfulness. Oh God my Father.
There is no shadow of turning in thee.
Thou changest not, thy compassions they fail not
As thou hast been thou forever wilt be.

Pardon for sin and a strength that endureth.
Thou own dear Presence to cheer and to guide.
Strength for today, and bright hope for tomorrow
Blessing all mine with ten thousand besides.

Great is thy faithfulness. Great is they faithfulness.
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I hath needed thy hand hath provided
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto to me."

When we make things complicated

Today in Sarah Young's Jesus Calling:

Trust me in every detail of your life. Nothing is random in my Kingdom. Instead of trying to analyze the intricacies of the pattern, focus your energy on trusting me and thanking me at all times. Nothing is wasted when you walk close to me. Even your mistakes and sins can be recycled into something good.

These words echo what a sister said yesterday, "we make this too complicated". At times it is hard...but it is really not that complicated. And so I am letting go of always analyzing emotions and thoughts and actions. No need to analyze what I already know. I know when I sin...I know how I feel...I know the voice that belongs to Him.

The whirring of a mind always thinking brings me to a self-centered life.

My friend, she is right you know...it is really not that complicated.

...we live and abide in Him
...we make mistakes and repent
...He recycles those mistakes into good
...transformation happens

And what do I do instead...focus all that energy on giving thanks and trusting Him.

Joy Texts

My phone beeps with an incoming text. It was a word of encouragement from one of my oldest's friends. Her words describe me as strong. Who me? How does she see that? Most days looking from the inside out...there is no strength.

I type back these words among others...

"warning: I am not that strong. I just know the one who is."

I send the message and glance at the clock. 9:00...The Hour of Blessing. Walking to my room I hear the echo of my words...

I know the one who is! Joy it floods my soul as I think, really think, about those words. I know the God who is....

God who is peace and joy and power...love and good and Holy. Whatever I need, he is, and I find joy there.

"This day is holy to our God. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength." Nehemiah 8:10

Touchpoints

I've been thinking about this word I used to describe this praying through the hours...touchpoints. I honestly don't know when it entered my vocabulary. Is it even a "real" word. My thinking sent me on a search for the definition.

I google touchpoints and realize that this is a term used in the business world. Those in the marketing field use it to describe the point when a customer has contact with a product. It is the way a customer forms a relationship with the product. Relationships with products...really?

I think they are on to something. Let me give you an example, if you hear these words "Here's a story of man named Brady. Who was bringing up three boys..." Well if you are like me...you remember the Brady Bunch, and maybe see the faces of the kids, the mother, Alice, and maybe you can remember the television you watched it on, and the smell of your mother cooking supper as you watched.

Praying through the hours...these are the touchpoints, the contact we have with God. The times on the clock that signal us to pray serve as reminders that there is a deep need to stay in touch.

My mind is shifting as I struggle to "pray continually". My definition of prayer changing from an event that must get done sometime during the day to an ongoing interaction with the Holy.

It is not by accident that I used this word to describe this way of prayer. Those who practice it...get it. The Awakening Hour is upon me and I feel a need to praise him for life, and love, and learning.

"Be cheerful no matter what, pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ to live."--1 Thes 5: 16- 18 The Message

Touchpoints

I wake up in an unfamiliar setting and reflect over the craziness of the last few days. The preparations and cleaning, the practice of music, egg hunts, and weather anxiety.

I am awake in a dark hotel room thinking of how I failed this Easter weekend. Failed the spiritual discipline of praying seven times a day...failed to complete things and failed in how I treated others. I think I missed the boat...what now?

Do I continue these "sacred pauses" throughout the day? Is this something I should continue to make a part of my daily walk? I pick up Sarah Young's Jesus Calling. The reading for the day says,

"I am calling you to a life of constant communion with me. Basic training means learning to live above your circumstances, even while interacting on that cluttered plane of life. A successful day is one in which you have stayed in touch with me, even if many things remain undone at the end of the day."

Does it get any clearer than that. A word that pushes me past my failures to continue. The days that I stayed connected through this spiritual discipline I felt in touch. Not as much "sacred pauses" but touchpoints throughout each day.

This Easter Sunday was quite dark for me. No sun shining that morning...no lights working in the sanctuary. I spent the entire worship service anticipating when the lights would come on...thinking someone should turn the lights on!

The most beautiful thing about Easter...is that never again is it just one day. We are Easter people...what Jesus did is a done deal. There is no going back to before resurrection. So today...I celebrate and tomorrow I will celebrate. I can hear my mom singing the tune she often woke us up with on Easter morning...

"Every morning is Easter morning from now on. Every day's resurrection day the past is over and gone."

Jesus Nailed to a Tree

Tomorrow, the Friday called good, Jesus is nailed to the cross. He has carried the cross...

Now He will lay upon those two pieces of wood and allow them to drive the nails...

Into His hands and feet they pierce deep...

And grace flows to cover us. I want to hang my head and cry out. I am so sorry that this is the way. The way that covers me. I want to say thank you but these words fall short. There are no words for the way my heart feels...

Naked

This is the station where Jesus' very clothes are taken. Even typing the words seems to make me draw back. I turn my eyes from the image.

It is our first instinct...to cover up. The first thing Adam and Eve did after they sinned...made clothes from leaves. We want to cover what God can clearly see as if that will help.

Oh the time I spend covering. Trying to hide the flaws and imperfections from the world, from God...even from myself. Having our clothing taken in public is a high form of shame. Many of us have nightmares about it. Jesus lived it. Before he goes to the cross...everything is taken...even his clothes.

There he stands naked before God and men...nothing to cover. Nothing needed for cover. And because of what he did...the sacrifice he made...the only covering we will ever need is his grace.

Lord, help me remember that there is no reason to cover myself with you.  Your grace does that.  I want to be unashamed before you and I realize I cannot do this on my own.  I am sorry for the things that need covering...for my sin that caused you to be stripped.  Thank you Jesus....amen.

The Last Fall

I hear the slow methodical knock in the yard and go to see what it is. There on what is left of a fallen tree is the most beautiful woodpecker I have ever seen. Grabbing my camera I continue to sneak closer...inch by inch...wondering if the click of the shutter is going to scare him away.
(I did get a great picture...but technical difficulties has kept me from sharing. This one is from the Internet...you get the idea.)

I am amazed by his determination. What does he know about this fallen tree that I don't? What is growing on the inside? I watch him poke and knock off large chunks of bark. By now there is a large area where you can see the flesh of the tree. He works...determined...completely unaware of me and my camera clicking. I see a fallen tree...he sees breakfast.

Three times in the stations Jesus falls. In our culture falling is a bad thing. We do everything we can to never fall. When things fall around the house we promptly take care of it. The tree fell and all I see is future firewood...not good for much except to be burned. The woodpecker reminded me that there is value in the fallen things. Things can look useless from the outside but maybe there is some life on the inside. Tiny amounts of growth that the world cannot see. We learn as much if not more when we fall.

And when we do I believe it gives us the opportunity to cry out like Peter, and Jesus will never fail to reach down and take our hand.

Jesus Meets the Weeping Women

How can I read and study and hear a passage of scripture all my life and not know about this? Jesus on the road to the cross...stops to speak to the women there along the way.

They were weeping and lamenting over his pending crucifixion. Like me, I imagine that the sight of him beaten and torn brought them to their knees.

And then he speaks, "Daughters of Jerusalem, stop weeping for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children." He goes on to tell them that days will come when it is better to not have children, that they will want the mountains to fall and cover them. "For if they do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?" (Luke 23L 27-31)

I find myself, during Holy Week, weeping for Him too. The words He speaks to them, they do not feel comforting...more like a rebuke. Jesus knew the heart behind the tears that day. Could it be that they were weeping for the man Jesus was and not realizing that their own sin is what paved the way to the cross?

This is what we should weep about...and repent...and as my dear friend says..."move around". Move around to His way, move around when sin comes near, move around when temptation comes.

Jesus, I am so sorry for the things I have done that continue to cause you pain.  I want to be pure in heart...to see you clearly.  Show me how to move around my temptations, my tendency to sin.  I want to keep my eyes on you...amen.

Jesus Falls a Second Time

Midway through the stations and we find that Jesus falls again. Today I go to celebrate a life that has fallen from illness. His daughters stand together and I am struck by how beautiful it is...two young women...literally strengthening each other as they do the hard thing.

The pastor reads a quote from Sarah Young's Jesus Calling:

"You are mine for all time--and beyond time, into eternity. No power can deny you your inheritance in heaven. I want you to realize how utterly secure you are! Even if you falter as you journey through life, I will never let you go of your hand."

The quote reminds me of falling in another scripture when Peter asks to walk on water. He is the only one who asks to get out of the boat. There were many in the boat but only one who wanted to get out of the boat. And so he does and at first all is well. Can you imagine it...Peter walking on water? I wonder what feet look like when they are standing firm on something that continually moves?

Fear of falling often keeps us in our boats. The places we are secure, comfortable and safe. We would rather live the safe life than risk the fall. But not Peter...he was a risk taker. He is the only one I know besides Jesus who experienced the miracle of walking on water. At least for a little while.

You probably know the story...Peter looks down...takes his eyes off Jesus and down he goes. He cries for help and what happens next should give us all freedom to step out of the boat.

Jesus reaches down and takes Peter by the hand...pulls him up and they walk to the boat together. Jesus reminding Peter that faith would have been better than doubt in this water walking thing.

Where am I in this story? Where are you? Are you one that stays in the boat to worried about falling? Would you step over the side of the boat and place your feet on water like Peter?

Trusting Jesus to reach down and take our hand in the midst of the fall gives us freedom to take risks...do the hard thing. It's the title of a book I read once and it sticks with me. If you want to walk on water, you gotta get out of the boat.

Lord, I do not want to miss out because I am afraid to fall.  Build my trust in you...that you will reach down when I am sinking and take hold of my hand...amen.

Compassion on the Journey

This station of the cross...Veronica wipes Jesus' face...intrigued me the most. I was pretty sure I had never heard of this woman before, never read about her in scripture.

After a quick study I have learned that you will not find Veronica, nor this story, in scripture. The tale of Veronica is mostly legend or myth though some do believe that this might be the woman who touched the hem of Jesus' garment. They also believe that the cloth she wiped Jesus' face with held and image of Jesus imprinted on it.

What could we gain or learn from this station? Veronica's very name means "true image". The story goes that she had a cloth with the image of Jesus on it. Something sacred...to be cherished. Like that cloth we each have a true image of Christ too. The very beginning of scripture reminds us, "Let us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness." Jesus was there in the beginning with the Father...helping to create each of us...in the image of himself.

I wonder. Is my life reflecting His image? Do others know that somewhere in this heart of mine is the very imprint of Jesus? Do I cherish this image? Consider it sacred? Am I reaching out with compassion like Veronica to those in need?

Lord, help me reflect your very image today. In the doing, and the going, and the being. Don't let me walk by those in need of compassion. Show me how to reach out to them...to wipe their very face. Show me how to love them more...amen.

Help On the Journey

I have always had a lot of wonder about this station of the cross...when Simon the Cyrene carries it for Jesus.

Questions shoot through my mind. Why him? Did he know Jesus? Was he scared? Was his life changed by this? Did he begin to believe?

Everything that is written in scripture has a purpose...a wisdom. Jesus, he was God...and man. He could have called on Godly strength...his power to carry the cross. This is the man who walked on water...hushed storms...frightened demons with just his presence. These things did not change when he was handed a cross. He was still as much God as he was man. And in this moment, he chose to be weak. His choice was to allow someone else to help...to carry...to walk with him.

How many times have I refused help in the face of pride? Thinking "I can do this myself". And the truth is I probably could...but is that the point. Jesus accepted help...allowed someone else into the story. I like to think it transformed Simon's life. One of my favorite songs says it did.

Watch The Lamb

God created us for community...to live as one. Letting others help is accepting the blessings of God.

Mary Along The Way

The first time I watched The Passion I could not let go of the scene where Jesus falls and Mary runs to him.

In the movie she has this flash back of Jesus falling as a young child. She picks him up and holds him in her lap to comfort him. I guess I had never really thought about the horror those who loved him went through at the time of his crucifixion. I considered them to be just another group of spectators in the crowd.

It was so much more. Those that loved Jesus, the eleven, his brothers and sisters...his own mother...their hearts must have been ripped out while they watched. They were not like Jesus. The did not understand that this was just the beginning...to them...it was the end.

Throughout the movie I was moved by Mary's strength and commitment. He speaks to her from the cross and I cannot believe she is there. How can a mother watch and still...how can she not...be there for Him? It challenged me to take a look at my own desire to follow Him. Could I go to the length Mary did in loving Jesus? Would I follow Him in the terrible times as well as the good?

Lord, I want to love you like Mary did.  My heart's desire is to love you more...with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength...amen.

Jesus Falls

The third station of the cross is the first time Jesus falls.

I walk by the garden near the place where bean seeds are planted. I wonder what is going on down in the soil. Are they beginning to open and push their first leaf up towards the surface? I wish somehow I could be down in that dirt and watch the growth.

The Message says,

"Listen carefully: unless a grain of wheat is buried in the ground, dead to the world, it is never any more than a grain of wheat. But if it is buried, it sprouts and reproduces itself many times over. In the same way anyone who hold on to life just as it is destroys that life. But if you let it go, reckless in your love, then you will have it forever."

Jesus spoke these words. He knew that in a very short time all that he had taught the disciples...the things he had shown them...would all seem dead. Jesus understood this dying to live thing. I love the way The Message says it...reckless in your love. Webster's defines reckless as careless of the consequences or irresponsible.

The definition of the word seems negative...not a word we want others to define us by. This path that Jesus walked leads to the most incredible act of reckless love I have ever known.

Lord, help me to be reckless in my love for you, for others...not worrying about the consequences or the sacrifice...amen.

Carrying Crosses

Jesus is condemned to carry a cross. This wooden shape was created for one thing...torture until death. The Romans made an art of creating ways to execute. They took pride in their punishment. The cross...it was the most horrific way to die...and it was chosen to be the place where Jesus would take his last breath.

The cross was a symbol of death. You would never have found a cross hanging on the wall in someone's home or worn as jewelry around a neck. Today we could liken it to the electric chair...not something we would replicate in our homes...even have a picture of somewhere. The few times I have seen an actual picture of one...I shudder.

Take a walk through you home. How many crosses do you see? The scriptures tells, "take up your cross and follow me". I am torn by this. I can almost feel shudder beginning. My friend once said that there was a time she didn't really get it. She just wasn't sure why others thought following Jesus was so great...after all his life did not end so well. I thought...you got me there.

This is a hard teaching. Learning that Jesus creates beautiful things from what we consider horrible. It is a true mystery how this works.  The cross is the ultimate symbol of this.  Only Jesus could take something as horrible and gruesome as death on a cross and make it a beautiful symbol of our faith.

Lord, help me to realize that the crosses in my life...those things that I would rather avoid...these are the things that your want to use to make something beautiful.  Show me how to surrender those things to you.  Thank you Lord for the cross, for your power to make what I think is terrible into something incredible...Amen.

Gardens and Betrayal

I have to admit it...I am a country girl. I went to sleep last night just thinking about digging in the dirt today. I have had this vision in my head for so long...the perfect garden complete with a fence and guinea house. Each year I find myself planting...learning what works...finding joy in the smell of working soil.

I sit in the evening sun looking at the days work. With the help of my family..the fence is up..the seeds have been put in...tiny plants placed in rows. The guineas are in their new house and there is nothing else to do but watch the sprinkler rain drops on fresh tilled soil. A garden is such a picture of what will be...plants producing goodies. We work and sweat...our skin kissed by the sun and now there is nothing to do but wait and wonder. Will this pay off? Will the sacrifice make it worth it.

Jesus has been betrayed. He knows that something difficult is coming. And we find him in the a garden. There he lays it all down. He has this discussion with the Father...hoping there will be another way. In the end, he is willing...to sacrifice...to endure...to move forward.

I have thought about it throughout the day. Why Judas, would you sell out? Trade coins for the Messiah? Could it be that he just didn't quite believe that Jesus was who he said he was?

And isn't that in all of us...the ability to betray? It is easy to imagine that we would never do such a thing...sell out for coins or fame or moving up. The truth is we can and we do.

I too betray...when I pass by those in need, won't give my time to someone who is hurting, hold on to what belongs to Him.

Lord, forgive us when we betray you...put ourselves first...choose the world over you. Help me to return to the garden of prayer. The place where I find your very presence. Give me a willing heart. One that will sacrifice and lay down my own will...my wants...my desires. Create in me a clean heart where nothing would get in your way...amen.

Journey to the Cross

This Lenten season has been a little different for me.  Instead of fasting for a season I decided to give things away permanently...a purging so to speak.  The call to give has taken on many forms...some material...some emotional...still some things not making much sense at all.  And yet I still ask, "Lord, what can I give today?"

My friend tells me of this journey they take each Sunday afternoon through the stations of the cross at her church...14 points along the journey Jesus experienced.  I asked to go along wanting to check it out...see what this worship is all about. I follow the one with the cross, a member of the congregation.  I listen and recite the liturgy, bowing my head, in awe of the way Jesus took for me.

The words in the little book of liturgy say this is a prayer journey. A time of contemplation and it only takes an hour and I want more...more than an hour...

I hear a gentle calling...back to these pages.  The place where my own journey first took the form of words typed on a screen.  What could rend a heart more than watching one pour out grace for each of us?  I invite you along for this journey...a two week contemplation on each of the "stations".  These words, they are my giving as we near the end of this season.  A giving of stuff doesn't seem quite as hard as this gift.  Laying my heart wide and putting it into words seems tougher.  Inviting you along...even tougher.

Want to journey with an e-mail delivered to you each morning?  All you have to do is type your e-mail on the "follow by e-mail" found on this page.  In the end, on the fourteenth day, when Jesus is laid in the tomb...I am reminded that the journey is not at all about the Friday called good.  Nope, it's about the Sunday Jesus saves the world.
